When Do You Need To Visit an Optometrist in Ft. Myers

Taking care of your eyes is important if you don’t want to suffer from eye ailments too frequently. Despite all the care that one takes everyday, there might be many ailments that can affect your eyes. Knowing all of them is not possible for just anyone, and that is why one needs to see an Optometrist in Ft.Myers. An optometrist is the best person to tell what is wrong with one’s eyes and then prescribe a treatment. While it might seem to be a good idea to just take care of things on own, it is really not a wise thing to do. There might be some issues which can get serious like the following ones and needs to be taken care of by a specialist:

  • Burning or stinging in the eyes- If you have been experiencing burning or stinging in the eyes, then that could mean your eyes are getting tired. It might be due to dust, smoke or hay fever. Tired eyes can also be a sign of blepharitis or dry eyes. Things are severe if you have Keratitis, which points to an inflamed cornea.
  • Bloodshot eyes- There are tiny blood vessels in the eyes which can expand or burst if they are irritated or infected. Usually, this does not require any treatment. However, if the eyes turn red due to any injury or cut, then that can be more serious. This can cause pain and swelling and would need to be looked into by an optometrist.
  • Puffy eyes- Puffy eyes are not serious until and unless you have trouble seeing things clearly. Or else, it can be caused due to an infection, allergies or bumps on the eyelids, or even sores on the cornea. Usually, things get back to normal within a day, but if it persists, you may want to see an optometrist in Ft.Myers.
  • Twitching- Small and unintentional movements of the eyelids are common. This may stop by itself. If you notice, however, that the eyelids are closing for without any reason, and it usually lasts for long hours, or one side of the face tightens often starting near the eye, then that can be serious.
  • Lump in the eye- You might feel tempted to pop a lump, but it is wise not to do so. Styes are red and they are painful and are often caused by bacteria. A lump on the eyelid because of a clogged oil gland is a chalazion, but it is painless.
  • Odd sized pupils- Shrinking of the pupils when light enters the eye is normal. Sometimes, it appears to be stuck wide open or small. Both eyes may not be of the same size too. These effects can be for many reasons that includes migraines, nerve damage, or an eye surgery.
  • Crust- When your tears and oils dry, that often leaves a residue or sticky crust on the lids or lashes. If there is a small amount, then it is nothing to be worried about, but if there is too much, then seeing an optometrist is a good idea. This can be due to an infection or blocked tear ducts. The oil glands can get messed up due to Blepharitis.
